This month (September) is #HappyCatMonth therefore, in celebration, we wanted to give you some of our top tips to ensure your cat remains healthy for many years to come. Cats are known to be very independent; however, they can’t always take care of themselves on their own - they still need some tender loving care. Here are our 5 top tips to ensure your cat remains happy...
Allow your cat to use their hunting instincts
Cats are known for hunting, it’s in their nature. Therefore, when it comes to meal time don’t make it so easy for them. Allow them to problem solve and use their cognitive brains to hunt for their food. A great way to do this is by placing dry food into a toy so they have to hit and spin it to release the food.
Microchip your cat
To prevent cats from getting trapped, we recommend that they wear a quick release or snap opening collar. However, this does mean cats can lose their collar and they may wander off further than you would like them too, leaving them with little identity. Every year 250,000 pets go missing and a microchip can greatly increase the chances of them being found.
It is very important to separate where your cat eats from to where they go to the toilet – no one wants to eat next to the toilet. Therefore, ensure you place the litter tray in a quiet, private place and make sure you clean it on a regular basis. We recommend spot cleaning daily and replacing litter at least once a week.
Accept your cat for who they are – don’t punish them
Every cat’s personality is different. Not every cat wants to play or be stroked and cuddled with for hours. Accept your cat for who they are and respect their wishes if they want to be left alone. It’s also important not to discipline your cat if they misbehave. They don’t respond well to punishment, in fact it can actually do the opposite by making the behaviour worse, or making them nervous and skittish.
Try using Feliway
Feliway has a range of products that can help improve behaviour by creating the best possible environment for your cat. We believe your cat will be happiest when they are in their preferred environment, which is why we recommend using Feliway. It is a product that releases pheromones, which helps to relieve stress and anxiety in cats. You can buy Feliway as a spray or as a diffuser, and it can help you with the following:
- Change of homes
- Loss of appetite
